Old Testament Survey

Course Description 

1 This survey study provides basic information, application, and a general outline from each of the 39 books of the Old Testament while helping the student see God’s “big picture” in this relevant portion of God’s Word. 

2 The instruction will be enhanced with PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and pictures of Bible lands. 

Course Importance 

1 The Old Testament is the inspired Word of God and is foundational to our understanding of God. 

2 The Old Testament offers practical instruction for Christian living. 

Course Objectives 

1 This course is designed to equip Christians to use the Word of God accurately (2 Timothy 2:15) and to do the work of the ministry effectively (Ephesians 4:11–12). 

2 This course is designed to give students a greater knowledge of the Old Testament. 

3 This course is designed to encourage students to read the Old Testament. 

4 This course is designed to aid students in applying Old Testament biblical principles to their daily living. 

Textbook 
Benware, Paul N., Survey of the Old Testament. Chicago: Moody Publishers, 2003. (Book is included in the $25 cost of the class) 

Course Requirements
1 Academic Requirements 

A Students will read pp. 3–265 of the textbook Benware, Paul N., Survey of the Old Testament. Chicago: Moody Publishers, 2003. 

B Students will read selected portions from the Old Testament (refer to assignment sheet). 

C Students will be graded on assigned reading, material given in handouts, and classroom lectures. 

D Quizzes are over all lectures, handouts, and homework assignments for the stated units. 

E Tests are over all lectures, handouts, homework assignments, and quizzes for the stated units. 

F Homework assignments are due at the beginning of class. 

2 Attendance Requirements 

A Students are allowed to miss 2 classes unless special arrangements have been made with the instructor. 

B Students are responsible for all work missed during absences and should complete their makeup work within one week of returning to class. 

Schedule and Cost 

1 Time: Sundays, 3–5 PM 

2 Dates: January 17, 2010 – April 25, 2010 (13 weeks of class, see schedule) 

3 Location: Morningside Baptist Church, Room M107 

4 Cost: $25 (cash or check to Morningside) 

Grading 

1 Grades will be based on the total number of points earned on all quizzes and tests. Each point has the same value.

80–89 B 

70–79 C 

60–69 D 

0–59 F
